The New Girl star is currently supporting Pantene's Beautiful Lengths programme, which asks women to donate their hair to make wigs for chemotherapy patients.
Praising the scheme, Deschanel told Bella Sugar: "You can also encourage people to try a new fun short style. If I could cut my hair today, I totally would. I love a Louise Brooks bob!"
Deschanel also revealed that she considers her hairstyle a reflection of her "identity".
"I've always felt like a brunette with bangs," she said. "I've grown [my bangs] out before, but I feel more comfortable with them. I sweep them sometimes for a little change of pace. They have their own personality!"
Deschanel recently signed up to play Loretta Lynn in a Broadway production of Coal Miner's Daughter.
