Get Red Carpet-Ready
First we have '40s Siren', a look recently sported by Amanda Holden on Britain's Got Talent.
I have been working hard recently with the gorgeous Amanda Holden to create and style her hair throughout BGT. Amanda loves radiating 'old-skool' Hollywood glamour with her hair and wardrobe and for the final I went for an elegant, '40s-coiffed 'do' to match her stunning dress and make-up. To ensure that you look as red carpet-ready as Amanda, aim for soft, glossy hair with perfectly sculpted waves.
To recreate this style apply Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly Finishing Touch Cream, £4.79, into clean damp hair for a healthy gleam. Use heated tongs to ease the hair forward towards the face and hold in barrel curls. Once the full head is done, re-heat the hair with a dryer and diffuser to set the curls. Thoroughly brush through hair with the Lockonego Paddle Brush, £30 to loosen and mould.
Start at the crown for a smooth effect, then use the brush to sculpt defined waves towards the bottom. Create pin curls towards the front of your face (using small kerby grips) for an authentic '40s feel. Smooth over your roots and any fly-away hairs with the Lockonego Signature Medium Round Brush, £30, being careful not to disturb your waves. To ensure hair stays in place spritz all over with Sebastian Professional Sharper Fierce Hairspray, £12.75.
Next is the 'Sweeping Glam', a versatile and classic style suiting all ages and hair lengths. It's great for anyone from Miley Cyrus to Andie MacDowell.
Side swept, full, voluminous waves were a popular choice for A-Lister's at the hottest red carpet events this season. To attain this look and achieve perfectly polished tresses ensure that your hair is in excellent condition by using a deep-conditioning treatment such as Sebastian Professional Penetraitt Treatment Masque (£15.75). Its unique formula penetrates the hair, repairing and reconstructing its natural health for strong, soft, healthy hair. I always recommend rinsing the product well from the hair in cool water to close the cuticles, which will add shine and gloss for airbrushed-looking locks.
Volume is key to this look, so start by dusting a volumising powder at the roots to really pump up the volume. Separate the hair into a side parting and backcomb the hair at the crown to add height and volume. Using wide barrelled curling tongs, twist large sections of hair around the barrel, holding for a few seconds to add gentle waves to the hair.
Once the hair has cooled, gently tease through with your fingertips to loosen and mould hair into defined waves. Smooth over your roots with the Lockonego Signature Medium Round Brush, £30.00, being careful not to disturb the waves at the end. Pull hair on to the chosen side and secure with bobbypins if necessary. Spritz all over with Sebastian Professional Shaper Fierce hairspray, £12.75 to hold hair in place.
Finally we have 'Simple, Elegance', favoured by The Descendants actress Shailene Woodley.
Stars gracing the red carpet this year have opted for a variety of signature up-dos from ballerina buns, woven buns and smooth, sleek ponytails. Shailene Woodley chose to wear her hair in a mid-ballerina bun. I think it's a sophisticated, sexy, yet simple look that really enhances those cheekbones.
To style your hair for the red carpet, begin by gathering all your hair at the crown of your head and fastening into a tight, high ponytail - the higher up the better. Be sure to pin up stray hair that may have fallen down. Take a hair doughnut ring that matches your hair shade and feed the ponytail through.
Carefully start covering the doughnut with the ponytail and fastening the ends of your hair under the doughnut, sweeping your hair in a clockwise direction until all hair has been tucked away. Generously spritz Sebastian Professional Shaper Zero Gravity spray, £12.75 all over to hold the bun in place, then finely comb the front of the hair for smooth finish. Finish with a touch of Sebastian Professional Trilliant, £18.25, for a gentle 'halo' gloss.
