While interviewing the actor on live television, Gifford made the mistake of asking Short about the secret to his lasting marriage with his wife Nancy, not realising that Nancy had passed away two years ago.
"I think that it's live television and people make mistakes and there's no ill will intended," Short told E! Online.
"And I think it's nice to aspire to be that way," he concluded.
Gifford tweeted an apology once she had realised her mistake. Unfortunately, she sent it to a fake Martin Short Twitter account.
"I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I'm so grateful," she wrote.
Short's wife died of natural causes in August 2010 in the wake of an ongoing battle with cancer.
