US actress Jane Wyatt has died, aged 96.

The three-time Emmy award winner, best known for her role as the stereotypical American mother in 1950s TV show Father Knows Best, died of natural causes at her home in Los Angeles.

In addition to starring in Hollywood films alongside the likes of Cary Grant, Wyatt was concurrently known as a prominent opponent of Senator Joseph McCarthy's blacklisting of writers and actors in the 1950s.

According to the BBC, her grandson Nicholas Ward said: "She was loving and giving and always gave her time to other people."
