Jerry Lewis was hospitalised on Tuesday (June 12) in New York City after collapsing.

The legendary comic was due to attend a Friars Club gala last night to give Tom Cruise the Entertainment Icon Award as well as accept an honour himself.

Lewis apparently began feeling ill due to low blood sugar just before taking the stage and had to seek immediate medical treatment, reports Page Six.

Rock of Ages star Cruise provided an update on Lewis's condition when he accepted his award, saying: "I am sorry Jerry couldn't be here tonight, but I know he is going to be fine."

Lewis is thought to have eventually been released from doctors' care after being thoroughly checked.

A spokesperson for Lewis did not comment on this latest report.

Lewis was previously hospitalised for exhaustion last summer while touring Sydney. The Nutty Professor star notably returned to performing just days after that health scare.
