Former Bond girl Michelle Yeoh, The Artist star Jean Dujardin and Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer are also among the 176 actors, directors and producers invited this year, along with Sean Bean, Melissa McCarthy, Andy Serkis, Jonah Hill, Bryan Cranston, Jessica Chastain, director Terrence Malick and writer Stephen King.

The Academy was criticised last year for having a predominantly white male roster, but the new invitees are over 25% female and include a larger number of younger, non-white individuals.

McConaughey, known for his romantic comedy career, has recently returned to more dramatic work in movies like Mud and The Paperboy.

He currently stars in Steven Soderbergh's latest film Magic Mike.
