Sources have now claimed that Cruise made a last attempt to keep their relationship afloat by asking Holmes to visit him for his 50th birthday in Iceland, where he is currently filming Oblivion.
Her refusal is said to have sparked a massive row and brought their five-year marriage to a complete end.
"He begged her to go to Iceland for one last try at reconciliation," insiders told US Magazine. "She refused and a huge fight ensued.
"He was confident he could talk her out of it and keep her with him."
Cruise ended up spending his 50th birthday alone at the former couple's Beverly Hills home.
Holmes is alleged to have split with Cruise over her fears that Suri would be forced into embracing Scientology.
