Speaking to The Mail On Sunday, Berlin said that Cruise's upbringing left him "moody" and "angry" as a young man, something she experienced first-hand when he came to live in the home she shared with her late husband early in his career.
Berlin said: "I wasn't surprised Katie broke up with him. I was just surprised it lasted as long as it did. I was surprised when he married his first wife, Mimi Rogers, and I was surprised it lasted ten years a second time, with Nicole Kidman.
"Tom was moody and would get angry in a snap of your fingers. It was like something was smouldering and it would boil up and explode."
The film and theatrical agent recalled Cruise as having a string of girlfriends in his youth, explaining: "I never saw him with the same girl twice. It was almost like he had to prove he was wanted - or maybe he wanted to feel loved."
Holmes filed for divorce from the Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol actor last month (June 29), ending their five-year union.
The pair are rumoured to be in settlement talks, with Holmes seeking sole custody of their 6-year-old daughter Suri.
