Sheen appeared to sign off from Twitter in one of his final messages, which consisted of a photo of clouds from inside a plane and the caption "reach for the stars everyone. dogspeed cadre. c out (sic)".

Sheen became a Twitter sensation after signing up in March 2011 during the fallout from his Two and a Half Men firing, entering the Guinness Book of World Records by gaining one million followers in less than 24 hours.

His catchphrase #tigerblood was revealed as the second-most popular hashtag of 2011, behind only #egypt - used to group tweets on the momentous uprising in the country.

The 46-year-old has recently expressed regret about his well-publicised meltdown, saying: "Clearly, a guy gets fired, his relationships are in the toilet, he's off on some f**king tour, there's nothing 'winning' about any of that.

"I mean, how does a guy who's obviously quick-sanded, how does he consider any of it a victory? I was in total denial."
