The Twilight actor made the comment in response to reports that he is planning to marry co-star Kristen Stewart, which have since been denied.
"There was a magazine, with these pictures, saying I was getting married. No-one ever knows what is true or what isn't," Pattinson told BlackBook. "Even my own mum called to ask me if it was true."
He added: "[In interviews] you try to say things in the perfect way but you know unless you say something stupid, from which people will make you look like a d**k, you're not going to have sound bites.
"And if you don't say anything stupid, someone's going to make something up anyways."
Pattinson went on to reveal that he has been a lot more wary of the people in his life since becoming famous.
"My circle of friends narrowed pretty quickly," he said. "I like to be the parasite, not the other way around."
Pattinson recently admitted that he wants to "strangle" the person who came up with the nickname R-Patz.
