The man accused of the shooting at a Colorado screening of The Dark Knight Rises has reportedly claimed that he has no idea how he ended up in prison.

James Holmes, who made his first appearance in court on Monday (July 23), has allegedly asked jailhouse workers why he is behind bars.

"He claims he doesn't know why he's in jail," the worker told the New York Daily News. "He asked, 'Why am I here?'"

The insider continued: "He's claiming his belly hurts him. He complained once that he didn't like the food."

The worker went on to say that he believes the amnesia act is a ruse on the part of Holmes.

"He needs to save his act for the jury because no-one here is buying it," the worker said. "Everyone is convinced he is faking it."

The prosecutor in the case said that a death penalty sentence may take months to decide. She added that Holmes could stand trial within a year.
