Dylan McDermott was taken aback by a question about his mother's murder during an appearance on Good Morning America.
The American Horror Story star's mother was murdered when he was 5 years old in a then-unsolved case. After an initial verdict of suicide, the case was re-opened by detectives in Connecticut at the actor's request.
Good Morning America host George Stephanopoulos entered into an awkward moment with McDermott, who was appearing on the programme to promote his new film The Campaign.
Stephanopoulos asked: "You know there's something that's been in the news lately… I know you can't say much about it, but your mum was murdered forty five years ago... You were just 5 years old, and just recently, with your help, the case was finally solved.
"Is there anything at all you can say about it? I'd imagine that it's at least brought you some peace."
McDermott answered: "Well George, you know I want to keep my personal life personal, you know, and I'm here to talk about The Campaign, you know. That happened a long time ago, and I'd rather just keep it for myself."
Stephanopoulos did not pursue the line of questioning, simply saying: "Okay, we're gonna respect that."
McDermott stars with Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis in the upcoming comedy film about two bumbling politicians.
