The Hope Springs actor said that he believes there is enough cynicism in the world and he tries not to add to it by being negative.
"I don't like to get angry. It doesn't make me feel good," he explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "It is very human, but it's also a loss of control, and I like to have that kind of control."
Carell went on to clarify that while he tries to remain optimistic, he is more of a realist than anything else.
"It's not like I want to put sunshine and lollipops into the world," he said. "But I do believe there's been a turn toward an uber-cynical point of view, and it's borderline mean."
In June, Carell helped out at a Hollywood pizza shop after a member of staff didn't show up for work.
