Richards defends racist comments

Michael Richards, who played Kramer in Seinfeld, defends himself after making racist comments on stage.

The comedy actor was criticised after being filmed abusing two black hecklers at a gig in Hollywood. He raged at them and called them "niggers" at the performance which was recorded on a phone camera and posted on the internet.

He told a radio show in America he made the comments out of anger rather than prejudice. "There's no justification for the things that I said," he admitted. "But I was in show mode, and it was heightened.

"I'm shattered by it. The way this came through me was like a freight train. After it was over, when I went to look for them, they had gone." He added that he was "in a place of humiliation" because of the heckling and said he had never used racism before.

Richards' agent said he was starting counselling to learn how to deal with his anger and he has offered to apologise to the people he insulted.
