Vanessa, who is married to NBA superstar Kobe Bryant, had seemed to suggest she would not want to be married to someone who isn't a winner.
"I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can't win championships," she said to New York Magazine.
"If you're sacrificing time away from my family and myself for the benefit of winning championships, then winning a championship should happen every single year."
Vanessa now has told TMZ that her comments were taken out of context.
"I have been with Kobe for 13 years. I accepted his marriage proposal prior to him winning any of his five championships with his teammates... For anyone to think otherwise is wrong. It is not about being married to a 'winner', it is about our sacrifice as a family."
In 2011, Vanessa petitioned for divorce from Kobe after ten years of marriage, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the cause of their separation.
However, the couple appeared to have reconciled when they were seen sharing a kiss at a Laker's basketball game earlier this year.
Vanessa and Kobe were recently spotted together with their two daughters during the 2012 London Games.
