Female painter wins Turner Prize

German artist Tomma Abts has become the first female painter to win the £25,000 Turner Prize since its founding in 1984.
Abts, who has lived in London for 12 years, beat other short-listed competitors including a video artist, a poster artist and a sculptor.
The judges of the competition commended the artist on her work, describing it as "compelling images that reveal their complexity slowly over time".
Abts noted that it was "a real honour" to receive the prize, but did not know what she would do with the money. She then expressed her respect for the other artists on the short list saying, "I think it's nice, but every artist in the prize deserved to win."
Work by this year's nominated artists has been on display in London since October.
