Barack Obama recruits Harold & Kumar for campaign video - watch
The television commercial is for the upcoming Democratic National Convention, a crucial milestone in Obama's re-election campaign, the coverage of which is set to be hosted by actor Kal Penn, who plays Kumar.
The President is seen talking on the phone to an unseen recipient, telling them: "I need to know if you're on board... I'm counting on you. Everybody is. We have to get this right. There's a lot at stake here."
The person on the other end of the line is then revealed to be Kumar, who is watching TV and eating pizza with Harold (John Cho), who asks him: "Who was that? Sounded intense."
Kal Penn started as an actor before moving into politics around the time of Obama's first election campaign, as a member of the National Arts Policy Committee.
In 2009, Penn quit acting to become a civil servant in the Obama administration, accepting the role of Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement. He then left the role in 2010 to make A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas 3D.
Penn has previously said that his White House bosses "didn't care" about his role in the scatological stoner comedies, and earlier this year it was announced that Penn would co-chair Obama's re-election campaign.
