A message posted on the Celebrity Big Brother winner's Twitter read: "Unfortunately I have had no option but to end my relationship with Alex."
The tweet follows Reid's arrest on Wednesday (September 5) on suspicion of causing criminal damage and using violence to secure entry to the Essex home he shares with Houghton.
He was later released without charge.
The couple, who are parents to a two-month-old daughter named Dolly, have been taking "time apart" following a number of well-publicised relationship issues.
Only this afternoon, Reid insisted that he still wanted to be "a good father and a loyal husband" in an official statement apologising for the events leading up to his arrest.
"As a result of my own doing and through my actions, I have disappointed and hurt many of you, as indeed I have my family," the post read. "For this I am truly and deeply ashamed of myself.
"The birth of my daughter Dolly was a profound turning point in my life. Everything that I had done previously suddenly seemed petty and small - this tiny little girl awoke something in me that I never knew existed.
"And since Chantelle gave me this precious gift, I really have tried to take stock of my life. I have decided that this situation can no longer persist and above anything else, I must try to become a good father and a loyal husband."
Reid continued: "I hope that you will see some redemption in me and see that underneath all that has happened, there is a decent person who means no harm to anyone."
He also confirmed that his former management team "has been disbanded" and vowed to take "a few weeks away from the public eye" following "what has been a torrid time for myself and my young family".
Houghton and Reid got engaged on live TV last October after dating for little less than five months.
