Ricky Hatton's father has been arrested for allegedly assaulting him.

The attack is said to have taken place on Thursday, the day before the former world boxing champion announced his return to the ring in November.

The BBC reports that Hatton had to protect himself after 61-year-old dad Ray attacked him in the middle of a heated argument. The fight is said to have taken place in the car park outside the boxer's gym in Hyde, Manchester.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Shortly before 11.45am on Thursday, police received reports that there had been a fight involving two men outside a health and fitness club on Market Street, Hyde.

"A 33-year-old man was assaulted by a 61-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of common assault and subsequently given a police caution." Hatton is understood not to have been injured in the incident."

Hatton claimed in a press conference that his return to fighting in November is "more than a comeback", saying that he is "fighting to redeem himself" after a string of embarrassing and highly-publicised incidents in his personal life.

The boxer was filmed taking cocaine in a 2010 News of the World sting, which led to him being stripped of his boxing license. He later checked into rehab for several weeks, reportedly suffering from alcoholism and depression.

Hatton will fight an as-yet unnamed opponent at the Manchester Arena on November 24.
