One Direction's Zayn Malik quit Twitter over 'terrorist taunt'

By
One Direction star Zayn Malik has revealed that he briefly quit Twitter earlier this year after being branded a "terrorist".

The 'Live While We're Young' singer took a hiatus from the social networking site in August when his loved ones became distressed about the racially-motivated messages.

"You can say whatever you want about me, but when it starts to upset people I care about then that's a problem," he told Fabulous.

"[They said] nasty things like I'm a terrorist. How can you justify that? How can you call me that and get away with it?"

Recalling how cyber bullies "gave it to [him] double barrel" after his cousin posted a family picture from a Muslim festival, the 19-year-old continued: "We live in 2012 and I thought we'd moved forward.

"If that was said to me on the street or someone said it to my face or whatever, then something could be done about it."

Malik explained at the time that he returned to Twitter because he didn't want to let down his fans.
