Although we usually see hair accessories during the spring/summer, this year the trend has continued well into the winter. Accessorising is an affordable, quick way to give your hair a fashion update.
Hair accessories have certainly been in the spotlight this A/W season. The runway saw jewelled hairbands at Dolce and Gabbana, sparkling custom made clips at Gucci and windswept styles with delicate hairbands at Oscar de la Renta. Update your style quotient with chic adornments like headbands.
But if ribbons aren't your thing you can try sparkly diamante or silver decorative clips like Gwen Stefani or get creative by decorating your do with a few effortlessly placed mini clips. Take note though - there is a fine line between gorgeous and gaudy so you need to have a good eye for style to get it right if in doubt remember the old adage "less is more".
Vintage inspired hair graced the runway this season. Valentino echoed the '40s with feminine twists, whilst Caroline Herrera and DSquared2 opted for Bridget Bardot-inspired bouffant 'dos. But my favourite is definitely the iconic 1960s beehive with a modern twist.
Beehives are definitely big business. with many Hollywood A-listers including Jennifer Lopez and Kate Beckinsale sporting this retro, sophisticated style. Beyoncé's stunning beehive hairdo perfectly frames her face and brings out her gorgeous jaw line. Remember the bigger the better. This glam hairdo is all about backcombing and volume so you'll need lots of hairspray for a good hold.
The Dip Dye
Remember the days when showing your roots were considered unfashionable? A/W 2012 fashion shows have certainly changed that notion. Colour is bright and bold this season as designers sent their models down the runway with rainbow hued tresses. Think tonal colours such as dramatic dip dyed hair and spray painted roots. It's about a contrasting pop of vivid colour rather than the faded effect seen last season.
The dip dye has become a global trend that has been gracing the catwalk this year in a myriad of colours. John Paul Gaultier had heads turning with his bold use of hair colour on the runway. His models featured stunning spray painted roots in shades of cobalt blue, white and candy pink. Meanwhile Prada's models showed off their gorgeous contrasting two tone tresses.
Pink seems to be the flavour of the season with celebrities like Nicole Richie, Ashley Tisdale and Demi Lovato sporting the new trend. Model Coco Rocha shows us how it's really done with her hot pink curly dip dye. The effect from this latest hair trend is dramatic to say the least. A style that was once associated with being laid back is now high fashion. Get ready to see bold contrasting hair colours this season, as this trend is here to stay.
Extreme Sideways Slant
When you want your clothes to speak for themselves, then chic minimalism is the way to go. This year saw a re-emergence of the neat and sleek side parting. Autumn Winter collections from the likes of Diane Von Furstenberg made sure that clothes were the focus of their shows. Hair was given an androgynous edge with a slicked side-parting at Felder Felder and Mary Katrantzou. Meanwhile, Paul Smith opted for a softer, loose side-parting style, in stark contrast to the futuristic, masculine streamlined styles at Margaret Howell and Mary Katrantzou.
Whether you wear your hair up, down, curly or poker straight, a strong side parting is a must! It's an easy, fun way of re-inventing your look. Celebrities like Lana Del Ray, Kate Bosworth and Kate Hudson have been quick to pick up on this low maintenance trend. Emma Stone looked striking on the red carpet of the 2012 Oscars, with her sleek side parting and high bun complimenting her Giambattista Valli Haute Couture dress.
