Bono knighted in honours list

Published Sunday, Dec 24 2006, 23:46 GMT | By David Cribb
Bono has been awarded with a knighthood in this year's honours list.

The U2 frontman was honoured for both his music and his charity work, more specifically his work to help the third world countries in Africa. Tony Blair wrote to the singer, telling him: "You have tirelessly used your voice to speak up for Africa."

However, Bono, real name Paul Hewson, will not be able to brand himself "Sir", as he is not a British citizen. It is a situation much the same as Bob Geldof, who was awarded a knighthood 20 years ago.
