South Bank Show Awards nominations out

Fisher, nominated in the breakthrough category

The nominees for this year's South Bank Show Awards have been announced.

The annual ceremony held by the prestigious ITV arts show is to take place on January 23, hosted by Melvyn Bragg.

For the best comedy award, Ricky Gervais's Extras will be up against Sacha Baron Cohen's hit movie Borat and the return of The Royle Family.

In the best pop act category, Jarvis Cocker's solo debut Jarvis will compete with Arctic Monkeys' Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not and Amy Winehouse's Back To Black.

The Queen, starring Dame Helen Mirren, is up for the movie award along with United 93 and Red Road.

Newcomers to the world of showbiz, meanwhile, will compete for the breakthough award. Connie Fisher, who won the lead Sound of Music role in a reality TV competition is competing with, among others, David Oyelowo, Danny in Spooks and the new Never Mind the Buzzcocks host Simon Amstell.
