Actress Lindsay Lohan has entered a residential treatment centre in the States, after admitting in December that she had been attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

However, the Mean Girls actress's spokeswoman would not reveal where Lohan was, or what she was being treated for.

Lohan herself released a statement saying: "I have made a proactive decision to take care of my personal health.

"I appreciate your well wishes and ask that you please respect my privacy at this time."

Lohan has recently appeared in the film Bobby, about the assassination of Senator Robert Kennedy in June 1968, and was commended both for her talent and commitment as an actress by director Emilio Estevez.
