Opera singer "quit over pants"
Published Friday, Feb 2 2007, 09:26 GMT | By Dave West
Opera singer Dame Kiri Te Kanawa pulled out of a tour over fears pants might be thrown in her direction, she told a court.
Concert promoter Leading Edge Events is suing her for up to AUS$2m (£1.2m) for damages when she quit the 2004 tour with Australian star John Farnham. It claims she and her manager breached a contract.
Explaining her reasons to the New South Wales State Supreme Court, she said she had seen videos of underwear being thrown at her would-be co-star at previous shows.
Dame Kiri, from New Zealand, said the footage had alarmed her.
"I was concerned about the knickers or underpants and underwear apparel being thrown at him and him collecting it and obviously holding it in his hands as some sort of trophy," she explained. "How could I, in my classical form, perform in this way?"
The case is continuing.
