Arctic Monkeys managed to hire their costumes for the Brit Awards at a knockdown rate.

The Sheffield band appeared in two video messages of acceptance on Wednesday night, dressed up as Wizard of Oz characters and the Village People.

Fancy dress shop owner Fiona Gallagher has revealed that an assistant for the boys tried to get the costumes for the cheapest price possible.

"A man came in and said he wanted to hire costumes for the band," Fiona told the Daily Star. "He thought the outfits were perfect but said he only needed them for half a day - so could he have a discount? I was stunned. I told him I'd already knocked him something off by charging him only £20 per costume.

"He eventually agreed to pay the going rate - and proved as good as his word by bringing the costumes back to the shop later the same day. When I turned on the Brits on TV, I nearly died when I saw the Monkeys in my suits."

Gallagher is now planning to auction off the costumes for charity.
