Amanda Holden has said the last three years have been "hellish" to cope with, but that she has put the heartbreak behind her.

In that time, the Britain's Got Talent judge had a miscarriage and also experienced the stillborn birth of her son at seven months in her pregnancy. Holden then suffered a major health trauma while giving birth to daughter Hollie Rose in January this year, requiring an emergency caesarean and resulting in a stay in intensive care.

Speaking to The Mirror, Holden said the impact of events only sunk in during a holiday with husband Chris Hughes, Hollie and the couple's eldest daughter Lexi this summer.

Holden said: "It's only now that I can see how terrible it all was.

"I don't know why, but it wasn't until I got to America this summer that I became very reflective and looked back. I was on the beach one day and I said to my husband Chris, 'How did we get through all that?' It was hellish.

"Now we're coming into this brilliant, happy phase and I feel amazing. But unless you face the darkness, you can't see the light. I've come out the other end much more resilient. I've got rid of all the crap in my life and I have a happy ending - a gorgeous chubby baby girl."

Holden added that she felt she should share her story with other women who have faced pregnancy problems to give "hope".

"I felt that my story was so public, and it may help other women in a similar situation if I spoke out about it," she explained.

"I did eventually have a healthy baby, and I thought that might give them hope. But everyone has stories to tell. There is a lot of unspoken pain with lost babies.

"Just talking to all my lovely mums at the school gates was a revelation. They were like a protective army when I was going through my awful time, but loads of them had gone through IVF and miscarriages. Sometimes having a baby is not that easy. It can feel like a real battle."
