The couple attracted immense press attention while together from 2002 to 2004 and earned scorn from some critics for their film Gigli. Both stars later publicly blamed the coverage for playing a part in their break-up.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Affleck spoke about his current relationship with former flame Lopez.
"We don't have the kind of relationship where she relies on me for advice, but we do have the kind of relationship where there'll be an e-mail saying, 'Oh, your movie looks great'," Affleck disclosed.
He went on to say: "I remember when she got American Idol [in 2010]. I said, 'This was really smart. Good luck'. I touch base.
"I respect her. I like her. She's put up with some stuff that was unfair in her life, and I'm really pleased to see her successful."
The Argo director previously described the years he dated Lopez as the worst years of his life.
"In our culture, we get very much into short-handing people," Affleck said.
"I got shorthanded as That Guy: Jennifer Lopez, movies bombed, therefore he must be a sort of thoughtless dilettante, solipsistic consumer, blah blah blah."
Affleck is currently married and has three children with the actress Jennifer Garner.
