An anonymous user of the social network, @gexwy, then announced that he had the footage and released two videos featuring Bieber, promising to reveal more the following day.
However, it has now emerged that Bieber was staging an elaborate publicity stunt for his new music video Beauty And A Beat, which features Nicki Minaj.
Running up to 12pm ET (5pm UK time), Bieber tweeted a number of links to stories about the alleged theft, while Minaj hinted: "I'd be by a computer in 20 mins if I were u."
Meanwhile, "Gexwy" tweeted: "u have dealt with a lot of rumours for a very long time. as a kid. with the whole world watching. u ready for more? (sic)"
Bieber then confirmed the prank, saying: "since i was 14 i have had a lot of things said about me, from dying, to taking hormones, to dying again, to stuff about my family... to saying i had a baby with a woman i never even met. nude pics, drugs, my family, my character... but today... today i get to be in on it."
He then tweeted a link to the video, saying: "so to all of you... enjoy. let's go for the 10 million mark! Me, @NickiMinaj - this is #BEAUTYandaBEAT."
