The model was a target of internet hate by bloggers earlier this year for being "too heavy", but has told Vogue that she is happy to be a positive influence in the modelling industry.
"I am excited to be in a place where I can be a good example," she said. "I think it's important to look at magazines and think a healthy lifestyle is attainable.
"Now that the fashion industry likes the idea of me, I'm happy if I can have an influence."
The 20-year-old also spoke about trying to lead a normal life.
"I still want to hang out with my family and be a normal girl. You have to be confident, and that doesn't mean starving yourself," she added.
Meanwhile, Upton's personal trainer David Kirsch praised her commitment, revealing: "I have trained a lot of models and celebrities, and let me tell you she is so determined and willing to do whatever it takes. She's incredibly smart and driven."
