Martin Sheen: 'Mitt Romney is stupid, arrogant'

Martin Sheen has described Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney as "stupid" and "arrogant".

The outspokenly liberal former West Wing actor recently told The Huffington Post that the US could face dire consequences if Romney is elected on November 6.

"He is, in essence, a very arrogant, very successful businessman [who] believes in unrefined free enterprise," Sheen declared. "He doesn't have a clue what 99% of the people are going through."

The star continued: "He's never lived on that level. He's never had to compete for a job or face eviction or struggle to get a college loan. He's a guy that the old phrase applies to: 'he was born on third base and thought he hit a triple'!"

Sheen went on to accuse Romney of promoting an unfair agenda by allegedly catering his policies to the wealthy.

"He would be a reflection of the 1%. They say this kind of rhetoric that I'm doing right now is advocating class warfare, but that's nonsense. There is no class warfare; the war ended a long time ago and the poor lost very badly," he explained.

"While the upper 1% of our population has continued to rise, the 99% has continued to drop. The unions are at risk, and it's no secret it's not getting any better for the 99. If Romney is elected, that's going to be the level that we start at!"

Sheen has advocated for liberal policies dating back to his college years. He was approached to run for Congress in Ohio in 2006, but Sheen ultimately declined to seek office.

He endorsed Barack Obama in the 2008 US presidential election and has carried on that support this year.
