The actor acknowledged that he has had a number of relationships over the years but suggested that he does not want to be notorious for his romantic endeavours.
"I am an extreme person," he told The Sun. "If someone says, 'Jack, you are a womaniser', I don't deny it.
"But the life of a gigolo always ends badly. That is one of the reasons I felt uncomfortable about all that 'sex legend' stuff."
Nicholson added: "I no longer have the energy to both work and fool around. So the last few movies I've done, I have hardly left the hotel at nights."
The star of The Shining, who dated Anjelica Huston for 17 years and was married to Sandra Knight for six years in the 1960s, also insisted that he has had meaningful relationships with women.
"There are also women I have seen, intimately, for a very long time over my life," he said. "Unexpected, perhaps, but true."
