Kirstie Alley has claimed that Scientology helped her to overcome an addiction to cocaine.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the Dancing with the Stars contestant explained that she would be terrified that something could go wrong when she was taking the drug.

"I thought I was going to overdose almost every time," she said. "I would snort the coke, then I would sit there, I'd take my pulse [thinking], 'I'm dying, I'm dying, I'm dying'. Who would keep doing it?"

She explained that a friend involved in Scientology advised her to read Dianetics, the L Ron Hubbard book which sets out the ideas behind the church.

"Somehow I got through [the book] and I thought either [Scientology] is the world's biggest scam or I thought this is how I am going to get rid of this hideous compulsion," Alley said.

Alley also revealed in the interview, which aired last night (November 7), that she fell in love with Patrick Swayze while they were both married.

She is currently competing in Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars, which airs Mondays and Tuesdays on ABC.
