Lewis has been romantically linked to the 19-year-old for months, and although their relationship has been denied, Payne did admit that he thinks the 'Lovebird' singer is "hot".
"It's very flattering to get compliments like that. It's cute," she told Look. "If you have a bond with someone [age] doesn't come into it.
"I'd date someone younger or older, age doesn't matter to me. Or looks, really - it's all about maturity."
Asked what type of guy she goes for, Lewis replied: "I like someone who can take the reins, who knows what they want and is strong with me.
"I'm quite fiery, so they have to be able to handle that. But I do like to feel protected. Also, being artistic and spiritual. That's what's important to me. And I'd never trust a man who can't dance."
Lewis also confessed that she hopes to get married in just two years time.
"I never used to think I'd get married, but then at my brother's wedding [in 2010] it hit me that I do [want to], and since then I've had loads of ideas," she revealed.
"I know exactly where I want to get married, it's a beautiful place in Europe. I'd like to be married just before I'm 30, when I'm 29, but I don't know if it will happen."
However, Lewis said that she will not be emulating fellow pop starlet Rihanna and start stripping off in an effort to attract admirers.
"I never dress to shock... You wouldn't catch me dead in hotpants," she stated. "I love Rihanna's style and I'm quite comfortable in myself, but it's just not me. Even if I had Kate Moss's body, I wouldn't."
One man who Lewis is unlikely to strike up a romance with is her boss Simon Cowell, who she insisted is not as much of a lothario as he appears.
"I actually think one of the biggest misconceptions about him [is that he's flirty]," she said. "He's very charming, but he's like that with everyone - men, women, whoever they are and whatever their job is.
"He's such a lovely guy and he's not fake - that's what I really like about him."
