The veteran ABC News anchor was pulled over in Delaware on December 1, reports TMZ.
The 78-year-old was apparently seen driving onto the shoulder of the road, before failing a sobriety test.
He was then taken to a nearby police station before being booked for a DUI and later released.
Local police sources have stated that Donaldson was "very co-operative" throughout the arrest.
Sam Donaldson has worked with ABC News since 1967, and is perhaps best known for being the network's White House correspondent from 1977 to 1989 and from 1998 to 1999.
He has also anchored 20/20 and This Week, and is currently a contributor and analyst for the ABC network.
