Margaret Thatcher is recovering from an operation in hospital, it has been confirmed.

The former prime minister of the UK underwent minor surgery to remove a growth from her bladder, BBC News reports.

"She is absolutely fine," Thatcher's spokeswoman stated.

Lord Bell, a friend of the Iron Lady, described the operation as "minimally invasive" and added: "[It] was a complete success and her condition is satisfactory. She'll stay in hospital for a few more days and then she'll go home.

"She's very tough. The doctors are perfectly happy. They say the operation has been completely satisfactory."

The 87-year-old, who has endured ill health in recent years, is expected to remain in hospital overnight.

After suffering minor strokes in 2002, she was advised by doctors to stop making public speeches.

Biopic The Iron Lady, starring Meryl Streep, received some criticism in 2011 for focusing on Thatcher's dementia in later years.
