Anna Williamson's Showbiz Peek at the Week: 'Splash!', Kim and Kanye

By
Anna Williamson
The days are grey and murky, gym memberships are buckling under the pressure of the post-festive intake, and the celeb fraternity are joyfully showing off their bikini bods and bank balances in far-flung sunny climes. Yes, my friends, it's January 2013, the Mayans were wrong, we made it! Happy New Year.

After a hectic few months wearing crinoline, and sharing a dressing room with Louie Spence in panto-land, I'm firmly back in the land of entertainment and showbiz gossip.

And what a start to the year. Marriages, babies and breakups have dominated the headlines. Ronnie Wood and Hugh Hefner are no doubt enjoying their glamorous new wives, Kate Winslet has scored a marriage hat-trick with her bizarrely monikered Ned RocknRoll, and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are rumoured to have finally taken the plunge whilst holidaying with their 6 kids, 12 nannies (and a partridge in a pear tree) on the Caribbean island of Turks and Caicos.

'Kimye', Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, have started the year the way they mean to go on for 2013 - in every paper and gossip mag possible - with the news they are to become parents. Thought to be due around June, baby Kardashian-West is already the subject of million-dollar 'first picture' offers. Tis lovely news of course, but with Kim still married to her second husband Kris Humphries and a prolonged divorce imminent on the grounds of 'fraud', we wait to see how the latest Kardashian saga will play out over the coming months.

And more lovely baby news this week, as Lily Cooper nee Allen and her husband Sam, have welcomed a new bundle of joy, another little girl. 14-month-old Ethel has a baby sister, Marnie Rose Cooper. Gorgeous.

Not so joyful for our Harry Styles and US star Taylor Swift. The short lived romance has finished before it even got started. Their New Year's Eve Times Square PDA has rapidly turned sour with bitter rows and Taylor insinuating that Harry was fortunate to be linked to her. Harry's camp suggest that she was 'nagging about other women'. Still, you've gotta love the 'coping methods' both have displayed. Far from crying into their spilt Mahiki mojitos, Taylor has been seen sashaying around California, wares on show, and Harry (gawd love him) has jumped straight back in the saddle (no pun intended) and has since been photographed frolicking in hot tubs with American TV host Hermione Way, and a succession of blondes back in Blighty. Harry...you're a cad, but that's why we love you!

Corrie and Dancing on Ice star Samia Ghadie has also been at the mercy of a very public (and unwanted) love spat. Her pro skater partner Sylvain Longchambon has been at the centre of the rumoured love triangle, involving his recent ex girlfriend Jennifer Metcalfe. But romance issues aside, with the start of the new series having just kicked off, sexy Samia is already looking like a front runner in the skating show's eighth series.

With a line up also including Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle, TOWIE's Lauren Goodger, MP Oona King, and the loveable chain-smoking Duracell bunny Cheggers (!), the casting is certainly varied this year and got off to great start - a terrific show opener with all the skaters, pro and celeb, together. Even the revamped judging panel, with the newly reinstated Jason Gardiner and (her opinion clearly does matter) Karen Barber, got a special entrance. Shame the star signing Pamela Anderson got the (skating) boot on the first flipping show!!!

The producers, knowing the lagging ratings needed a serious shake up, have certainly upped the stakes, and signing tabloid gold in Pammy and her massive mammaries was a considered move. Shame the viewers didn't invest quite as much in her as ITV did with her rumoured £150k fee, by picking up the phone and voting. A costume malfunction and boob faux pas was ironically her demise from the ITV1 show. A skate off that consisted of the undisputed queen of men's fantasies, and Keith 'Cheggers' Chegwin quite frankly made my night. Telly gold.

Rylan Clark Celebrity Big Brother

Channel 5 must be preening their feathers with the start of its latest Celebrity Big Brother, surely soon to be renamed 'Rylan and Friends'. The X Factor star IS the show and is already such a favourite with the bookies it's not worth taking a punt anymore, it is such a foregone conclusion. And justified. His amusing outbursts, prancing about and 'moony' pulling is actually endearing, and it's safe to say that 2013 is going to be a very lucrative year for the Essex chap.

And new celeb diving show Splash! kicked off to mixed reviews, and not just for host Vernon Kay's 'yachting at the weekend' look, yet achieved impressive ratings as over 6 million tuned in to ITV1 to see the banter and belly flops unfold. Fronted by Olympian Tom Daley the format has faced criticism but all I'll offer up for now is that the celebs taking part are feeling it. Trust me. Injuries and drama have dogged the live series from the offset and with some impressive tricks expected in the coming weeks, I'd urge you to give the rest of the show a chance. Even if only to see Joey Essex in his budgie smugglers, yell 'REEM' mid-groin straining dive. Celebs larking about hurting themselves for our viewing pleasure? Surely that's what Saturday night entertainment is all about.
