Jennifer Lopez and her husband Marc Anthony are suing US celebrity magazine National Enquirer for libel.
The couple are seeking "substantial damages" after the magazine published a story alleging that they were linked to a drug scandal.
The couple have filed the case at the Belfast High Court. They also intend to lodge actions in London, Dublin and several other European cities.
Their lawyer Paul Tweed, who has pursued libel claims for Britney Spears, Whitney Houston and Liam Neeson, said: "It's virtually impossible to sue for libel in the United States because of First Amendment protections.
"But these publications are now appearing in Ireland, the UK and France, and on the internet, and they're now subject to the libel laws of these jurisdictions."
