'Bridesmaids' director tells Melissa McCarthy critic to "f**k himself"

By
Director Paul Feig has defended actress Melissa McCarthy on Twitter, after a film critic branded the Emmy Award-winning star "tractor-sized" and a "hippo" in a review.

Feig, who worked with McCarthy when she played Megan in the 2011 smash hit comedy Bridesmaids, took to the social networking site to tell New York Observer film critic Rex Reed to "f**k himself".

Reviewing McCarthy's latest film Identity Thief, in which she co-stars with Jason Bateman, Reed wrote: "Melissa McCarthy is a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success.

"Poor Jason Bateman. How did an actor so charming, talented, attractive and versatile get stuck in so much dreck?"

However, Feig hit back: "For his catty and school bully name-calling of the supremely talented Melissa McCarthy, I cordially invite Mr. Rex Reed to go f**k himself."

McCarthy, who also stars as Molly in TV series Mike & Molly, has yet to respond to Reed's comments.
