Forest Whitaker was falsely accused of shoplifting at a New York City deli on Friday.

The Last King of Scotland star was leaving Milano Market on the Upper West Side when a store employee confronted him, claiming he had taken an item off the shelf.

The worker proceeded to frisk Whitaker in front of other customers, only to discover that his allegations were incorrect.

The actor's rep told TMZ: "This was an upsetting incident given the fact that Forest did nothing more than walk into the deli.

"What is most unfortunate about this situation is the inappropriate way store employees are treating patrons of their establishment. Frisking individuals without proof or evidence is a violation of rights.

"Forest did not call the authorities at the request of the worker who was in fear of losing his employment. Forest asked that, in the future, the store change their behaviour and treat the public in a fair and just manner."

Whitaker stars in the upcoming Lee Daniels movie The Butler, based on real-life White House butler Eugene Allen.
