Dame Helen Mirren wins theatre award

Dame Helen Mirren has received the Distinction in Theatre Award from Los Angeles' Geffen Playhouse.

The Oscar-winning actress received the prestigious honour in recognition of her 40-year stage career, during which she has twice been nominated for a Tony award.

Her award was presented by 3rd Rock from the Sun actor John Lithgow in a ceremony at the Geffen Playhouse.

Mirren told guests: "I suspect it's because of my work in film that I'm getting this award. I can't imagine you've all seen my work in theatre."
