Cain, who was engaged to McCready in the '90s, has now opened up about her death in an interview with People.

Echoing comments from McCready's ex-boyfriend Billy McKnight, Cain said: "I'm saddened to hear of her passing, but I'm not surprised."

Cain claimed that McCready's struggles with substance abuse were not to blame for their split, but spoke candidly about the problems in their relationship.

"I can't paint too pretty a picture," he said. "She would start arguments, start drama. Things weren't allowed to be good... She was never abusive or addictive with me, but red flags were everywhere. I saw all the bad signs and told her to get out."

Cain described McCready as "combative", manipulative and "kind of poisonous", but added that his thoughts are with her two young sons.

"My first thought was of the poor kids," he said. "To think about the legacy those boys have been left, it's just tragic... All her troubles were self-inflicted. She had everything. She was a tremendous talent but everything about it was a waste."

Mackenzie Phillips recently opened up about her sadness over McCready's passing, saying: "I'm in grief and it's very raw."
