Perry and Cyrus emerged victorious at the annual star-studded ceremony, which also saw Eminem, One Direction and Bruno Mars honoured with prestigious Moonman awards.
We cast our eye back over the best and worst dressed stars of the evening - from a relatively demure Rita Ora to a very daring Iggy Azalea - below:
Miley Cyrus arrived in a halter mini dress with the faces of 2Pac and Notorious B.I.G printed across it along with the words 'Please Stop Violence' emblazoned across the bottom. She teamed the backless vintage Tom Ford number with a pair of black and white chequered Tom Ford peep-toe boots.
Katy Perry was more reserved in a vintage-style, figure-hugging mint green satin dress, before slipping into a racy black mesh number which she accessorised with a gold Chanel belt.
Iggy Azalea left very little to the imagination in a black gown slit at the sides, while Ellie Goulding was similarly daring in a black sheer lace dress which revealed her underwear.
Rita Ora wore a plunging halter-neck black gown as she posed on the red carpet, while MTV presenter Laura Whitmore looked pretty in a monochrome peplum dress.
Dutch singer-songwriter Eva Simons arrived in a bizarre monochrome ensemble with gold boots, while Icona Pop members Caroline Hjelt and Aina Jawo were dressed like two matching mirror balls.
Ariana Grande wore a pink bodycon dress with black lace detail and British TV presenter Louise Roe added a splash of colour in a strapless Aztec print dress.
The 2013 MTV EMAs ceremony is repeated in full tonight (Monday, November 11) at 6.30pm on MTV UK.
