Robert Powell to play Hercule Poirot in Black Coffee touring production

Robert Powell is to star as Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot in a production of Black Coffee.

The play is Christie's only stage production to feature the world-famous sleuth.

Powell, whose stage credits include Alan Bennett's Single Spies and Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, will be supported by Liza Goddard, star of TV show Bergerac, Gary Mavers, best known for playing Doctor Andrew Attwood in Peak Practice, and Ben Nealon, who played Captain Forsythe in ITV drama Soldier Soldier.

Mathew Prichard, Christie's grandson and chairman of Agatha Christie Ltd, said: "I am so pleased that Robert Powell has agreed to play Poirot in the Agatha Christie Theatre Co's production of Black Coffee starting in January.

"He will be the latest in a long line of distinguished actors to play the role, and a real treat lies in store in 2014 for all those around the country who go to see the play."

The extensive UK-wide tour of Black Coffee kicks off at the Theatre Royal, Windsor on January 7, 2014.
