Joanna Lumley tackles gunman

Joanna Lumley tackled a man brandishing a gun in a Sheffield bar, a court has heard.

The Absolutely Fabulous actress confronted Philip Cottam after a gas-propelled air-gun fell from his bag at Ruskin's Bar, Sheffield in March.

She asked Cottam if he intended to "cause harm" with the weapon before engaging him in conversation until police officers arrived.

Cottam told Sheffield Magistrates Court that he was taking the gun to have a laser sight fitted but stopped for a drink en route.

He admitted having an air rifle in a public place and possessing an offensive weapon. He received a four-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months.

Prosecutor Nigel Duckworth said: "One might think it quite a brave action. He told Miss Lumley he was not going to use the gun but claimed he was undercover and needed it for protection.

"Miss Lumley knew police had been called and she engaged Cottam in conversation until firearms officers arrived."
