Tony Blair sees out premiership with Arnie

Tony Blair spent his last full day as Prime Minister in talks with Terminator star Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The former actor, now governor of California, visited Number 10 yesterday to discuss climate change in a follow up to Blair's trip to Los Angeles last year.

Later today (Wednesday) Blair will hand over his role to Chancellor Gordon Brown.

He and Schwarzenegger held a press conference together at which Blair refused to confirm rumours he will become a special peace envoy to the Middle East.

Schwarzenegger said he would support Blair in such a role but added he would rather he take on environmental issues - a cause celebre for the governor.

"Out of selfish reasons I hope that he becomes the envoy for the environment and brings all the countries of the world together to join some kind of treaty."

He continued: "A Kyoto kind of treaty - that everyone can join and we can all together reduce greenhouse gases. I think the Prime Minister is the only person who can do that.”

A spokesman for the Prime Minister confirmed the meeting would be his last bilateral talks in Downing Street. He commented: "I suppose that will be the case."
