Ten Things You Never Knew About Beth Ditto
The NME reckons she’s the coolest person in rock. Noel Gallagher thinks she’s “fookin’ immense”. Kate Moss likes to spend the odd night on the tiles with her. If you’d told us twelve months ago that a five-foot, 15-stone lesbian from Arkansas would become a tabloid staple, we’d have suggested that you’d been indulging in those naughty herbal fags again. But now that she’s well and truly arrived, can you imagine life without her? Read on to find out more about the insurmountable rock icon that is Beth Ditto.

1. As a child, Beth found an unusual remedy for the munchies. "I did eat squirrels when I was a kid," she confesses. "People in Arkansas just do - they'd think you were a freak if you ate squid there!"

2. Ladies – get your hankies out. Beth’s in a long-term relationship with a cross-dressing woman named Freddie.

3. How did Beth get that mind-invading, earth-shaking, loin-tickling voice? "It comes from the South, being raised Southern Baptist and Pentecostal, but I've never had a very quiet voice," she confesses. "I tried in choir to make it smaller, and it just didn't work out. I could never have that kind of meek, little wispy whimsical lavender and lace voice. It comes from my body. There's no way I can fight it." Amen to that.

4. Beth refuses to shave her armpits or wear deodorant. What a sociable sort she is!

5. You love Gossip's breakthrough hit 'Standing In The Way Of Control', right? But did you know that it's about the US government's opposition to gay marriage? Nah, the people who made the Skins trailers didn't either.

6. What does Beth say about her body? "I just like food too much, and I don't want to change," she maintains. "I spent so much of childhood trying to change, and I just got sick of it. I don't want to look like Britney Spears - I just don't want to. She's hideous." Calm down, love - we get the picture!

7. Beth’s best showbiz buddy – aside from Kate, of course – is Scissor Sisters frontwoman Ana Matronic.

8. On her days off, Beth can often be found at London’s Natural History Museum. "I love art, but there's nothing pretentious about dinosaur bones, and I like that," she says.

9. Beth refused to play a gig at Topshop recently because the fashion chain doesn’t stock clothes in her size. We wonder what she thinks of the store's Kate Moss range?

10. Although she topped the NME’s Cool List, Beth insists that she’s no party animal. "I actually have the opposite of a rock star lifestyle," she maintains. "I mean, I have to play shows and what not, but outside of that I'm a grandma. I do things like bake cakes and worry about whether I have time to pot my flowers before it gets too cold."
