A judge has given Pete Doherty another chance to get off drugs before she decides whether to send him to jail.
The star has previously admitted driving illegally while in possession of crack, heroin, ketamine and cannabis. He was told in July he would go to prison for the offences if he did not successfully complete a rehab programme.
On Tuesday he returned to West London Magistrates’ Court where sentencing was again adjourned. Doherty said he had attended the programme and offered to point out where doctors had put an implant aimed at helping him escape addiction.
And his lawyer Sean Curran said he “presents himself certainly looking a lot better today” than his previous appearance.
District Judge Davinder Lachlar said the singer would go to prison when he is sentenced on September 4 unless he could stay clean.
"I see that he did not actually do the detox until the end of the month," she said. "It’s early days, to put it mildly. He has been tested and it’s positive - perhaps not surprising at this early stage.
"What I have in mind is to adjourn the matter for four weeks to assess his motivation. What I have in mind is a community order or prison. If he does not show his motivation it’s prison, as simple as that."
