Lindsay Lohan's parents have complained about the decision to send the Mean Girls star to jail.

The actress was charged on seven counts of cocaine possession, drunken driving and reckless driving this week. She has been ordered to spend one day in jail, and perform ten days of community service. Lohan must also complete drug treatment and an 18-month alcohol-education programme.

"It's really sad," Lindsay's mother Dina told E! Online, referring to the jail sentence. "Something bad is going to happen, I'm afraid."

Lohan's father Michael has also voiced his opposition to the decision, insisting that "a helping hand" would have been more appropriate than a punishment.

"She is a little girl who has been used by everybody around her because of her celebrity and that's what's landed her where she is. Now, she needs a helping hand, not a sentence," he explained. "I'm against it. Jail would probably harm Lindsay more than help her."
