Spears cleared of mistreating dog

An animal welfare group has dropped an investigation into allegations that Britney Spears mistreated her pet dog.

The LA branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals visited the star's home following reports that her Yorkshire terrier's leg was broken.

But it ended the probe after a vet confirmed that the dog - called London - had been treated for a leg injury.

Society president Madeline Bernstein told US magazine: "It was a very slight fracture. The dog didn’t need a real cast or surgery."

She added that the 'Toxic' singer was not at home when the accident occurred, saying: "The dog got under someone’s foot in the walk-in closet…it’s not that unusual for people to step on their dogs by accident or trip over them. Things like this can happen."
